Winter Weather Safety

Posted: Saturday, December 25th, 2010 @ 5:41 pm in Community, Home | No Comments »

With the cold weather upon us it is important that your chimneys have been recently cleaned by a professional cleaning crew. Chimney fires can be very devastating; potentially burning your house down.

Another important winter safety tip is in regards to going out on the frozen lakes; know the area. If you are unfamiliar with the lake or pond that you are on, you may unknowingly walk on an area where there is running water underneath the ice, making the ice thin. Always have someone with you who knows the body of water well. Avoid travelling on the ice at night or in heavy snow, as it is easy to become disoriented.  Avoid walking on ice that appears dark or grey. This usually indicates that the ice is thin.

Permits for open burning in Lanesborough will be available from January 15th through April 30th, 2011.  For your convenience, permits will be issued free of charge by visiting www.bcburnpermits.com and following the instructions provided on the site.  You may burn as many days as you’d like, however, you must apply for a new permit on each day.  In you are unable to print the permit, please make note of the permit number and keep it with you while burning.  If you do not have access to the internet, please call the fire station at 413-443-2321 and leave a message in advance of the day you wish to burn (we will contact you with special instructions), or stop in and see us any Wednesday night after 6:30.  As this is something new for us this year, along with other participating cities and towns, any questions or comments you may have can be directed to the number above, or email us at contactus@lanesboroughfire.com.
